Additional Information
  • Space Planning reads many types of file formats for display, but some of the rarely used file formats are not available when saving images using the Bitmap Editor.
  • If saving JPEG 2000 Stream and JPEG 2000 TIFF formats from the Bitmap Editor, the images are converted to JPEG 2000 24 bit format. Alpha channel (transparency) information is not supported in JPEG 2000 files, due to evolving standards with this file format.
  • Transparency is supported for the following image formats:
              -  Targa 16 bit
              -  Targa 32 bit
              -  PNG 24 bit
              -  PNG 32 bit
  • Space Planning displays existing transparency stored in Targa and PNG image files. Space Planning's ability to capture new images using a Twain compliant device does not include the ability to create transparency information.
  • There are two ways of storing transparency information in PNG files:
Alpha Channel:

This method is used by PNG 32 bit files. In this method, 24 bits of color information are stored and the remaining 8 bits are used to store transparency information. Space Planning can load and save transparency information in PNG 32 bit format without restrictions. For example, you can import a Targa file with transparency and save it to PNG 32 bit format.

Color-key:

This method is used by PNG 8 bit, 4 bit and 24 bit files. In this method, one color is reserved to indicate a transparent pixel. A disadvantage of this method is that if color adjustments are made to the image, the transparency information may become corrupted. Some pixels may become transparent that are not meant to be transparent. A message explaining this issue is displayed when saving color-key transparency. The Bitmap Image Information dialog box will indicate when an image contains color-key transparency information. The PNG 32 bit format is recommended to avoid this problem. Space Planning can save color-key transparency information only if the original image contained this information. For example, you can import a PNG 4 bit file with transparency and save it as a PNG 8 bit file with transparency, but you cannot import a Targa file with transparency and save it as a PNG 8 bit file.
